Total Mobility Training in New Zealand is a specialist driver training programme designed for drivers who transport people with impairments, disabilities, and those using wheelchairs. This course focuses on effective communication, safe handling techniques, use of hoists or ramps, and ensuring passenger comfort and dignity throughout the journey. The training includes both theory and practical components, preparing drivers to deliver professional, safe, and inclusive transport services across New Zealand.

Vehicle hire for Mobility training -$100 plus GST
This course allows you to transport clients with physical impairments in the following vehicles:
This course is aimed at giving you knowledge on how to pick up, drop off and show care to your customers that have an impairment or disability. You will gain knowledge on safe driving techniques and applying safe practices in the work place while tending to your passengers needs.
This course is a requirement for the transportation of passengers requiring special needs by:
5-6 Hours for both Unit standards.
Theory
US 1748 - Transport passengers with impairments or disabilities (3 hours theory),
US 15165 - Transport passengers in wheelchairs using total mobility vehicles equipped with hoist or ramp (1.5-hour workbook per person (excluding training time if its required)
Practical Training
The practical’s will involve pick up and drop off where you will safely secure someone in a wheel chair into your vehicle or guide someone into your vehicle safely and ensure they are secure. You will then take that person(s) on a drive where you will monitor them throughout the drive. Your driving will be assessed during this time for safe driving practices as well as assessing how you interact with your passenger(s), you will be required to communicate to the passenger(s) through the drive as per a daily routine in your work role. You will be assessed on the pick-up and drop off of your passengers.
Note -As part of the practical’s, you will need to supply the passengers needed. These can be other staff you are booking onto the course, 2 passengers needed for U/S15165 and 1748. A wheel chair will also be required.
Practical Training Vehicle
You can bring your own Total Mobility vehicle or hire a vehicle from prodrive. This should be confirm upon Booking. Additional fee applied for vehicle Hire.
Please Note – if you bringing your total mobility vehicle , make sure it full fill all the standards requirements for health and safety and NZTA.
Classroom Theory Course, Assessment & In-Vehicle Practical Training and Assessment.
Unit Standard 15165 (Level 3, Credits 6) Transport passengers in wheelchairs using total mobility vehicles equipped with hoist or ramp.
Unit Standard 1748(Level 4, Credits 6) Transport passengers with impairments or disabilities.
$ 260 Plus Gst for each unit standard.
Upon successful completion of the course’s, the prescribed credits will be loaded to each successful candidates NZQA Record of Learning learning within 90 days of the assessment date. and will receive a completion certificate.
